We have a blog tour today which is close to my own heart. As a writer I jumped on the opportunity to participate in this tour. My apologies for the delay. I had some technological problems this morning. Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend!

Paperback, 184 pages
Release Date: September 20, 2016 (ebook)
October 2016 (paperback) by Self-Counsel Press
(first published November 30th 2007)

About the Book:

In addition to the expert advice author Marion Crook shared in earlier editions of Writing for Children and Young Adults, in this vibrant new edition, Crook explains some of the nuances and choices about the writing world online.

As well, she revisits the fundamentals of writing: establishing character, creating lively dialogue and developing plot with updated worksheets and examples. This edition shows the writer how to begin a story, plan plot, develop and hone the work for an agent or publisher, and how to make the crucial submission for a book that agents want to represent and publishers want to buy!

Excerpt

Telling stories is an ancient skill practiced in public at community festivals, around the campfire, in religious rites, and in private at the cradles of the young. It involves an innate ability to pick dramatic words in a way that paints a mental picture and gives the tale a sense of pace and tension. The story becomes important, even if only for a short time, to the one who hears it or reads it. It is a way of communicating excitement and the optimistic belief that the world is a remarkable and knowable place. Many writers have an enthusiastic following of readers who want to share in their adventures.

Telling stories is also an age-old method of communicating morality lessons to ensure that a point of view spreads in a palatable manner.Writing can be a way of instructing, advising, and guiding others. Most children don’t want to read stories that are written with such motivation, but many writers believe that teaching justifies their stories. A “moral” story isn’t necessarily a good story. The danger in writing morality tales is that the writer may ignore the needs of children and write from behind a screen of righteousness that thinly hides a lecture. As you may remember from your school years, most of us hate lectures.

Stories also offer an illusion of control as if the world can be controlled by the way we interpret it. Most writers offer stories that have beginnings, middles, and ends describing life as neatly compacted and logical. Perhaps this illusion of controlled life gives readers a sense of order.

You want to write a book that will delight many years later. You want your book to be the best you can produce, written in a style that is uniquely yours, perhaps using ideas that have never been written about or in a format that has never been tried. Writing is about creating.

About the author
Marion Crook has written many books for young adult and middle-grade readers. Here, she offers advice on writing, publishing, and marketing. Crook’s background in child development education as a nurse and her Ph.D. in education give her solid knowledge, but she maintains that a keen observation of people, places, and events can be the author’s most useful tool. An experienced teacher and writer, she gives her readers clear and practical tips, with humor and obvious understanding of what it’s like to write and publish.

Being an author in today's rapidly changing world not only encompasses the creation of words and characters appearing on the page. Being an author is also a job which entails the wearing of many hats from creator to promoter, savvy tech person to being informed on certain legal aspects and rights of the business side of publishing. Writing for Children and Young Adults by Marion Crook is a guide which will certainly help any writer aspiring to create stories or non-fiction for children of all ages.

In the first part of her book, Crook touches upon the important aspects of writing, explaining the important basic elements like character, setting and point-of-view. Along with helpful examples, she shares her own experiences along the way. The author covers all of the necessary bases from the various genres, the differences between the many types and styles of children's books--including a breakdown and explanation of the various age groups, along with a discussion of content and language. Everything is presented to the reader in a crisp, brief, easy to understand manner.

There is a very helpful section on writing non-fiction which I appreciated since writers never know if they want to explore other genres besides what they started out in. From coming up with an idea to creating an outline, keeping in mind curriculum, specialization, and the importance of getting the appropriate age-related reviewers, this section touched upon all of the necessary components. There is also a section on the types of publishing available today (traditional and self-publishing), how to prepare your manuscript, writing a synopsis and query, the author's platform, agents, copyright, royalties and more. Again, Crook is thorough and keeps the pacing steady while always informative.

Today's author is not only a wordsmith but also a business person and promoter. This book addresses these changes. Besides creating, writers have to know how to go about getting the word out and 'selling' their work. There's an entire section on "Marketing Your Book Online," which touches upon all of the necessary parts of the 'business' part of writing from websites to tours and formatting e-books, followed by another section on "Book Promotion." There is certainly a lot of information to be gleamed from this book! At the end of the book there is also access to a download kit which includes samples, resource guides and more.

As an author of YA and NA stories and novellas (and an aspiring picture book writer), I recommend Writing for Children and Young Adults by Marion Crook. The concise writing, coupled with the right amount of space given to address the assortment of subjects covered and information conveyed from someone who has been in the publishing world for years, will be a helpful guide for writers curious about or just starting out in writing for kids and teens.

#Book Blitz: Sucker Punched by Kelley R. Martin #romance @kelleyrmartin @XpressoTours

Sucker Punched
Kelley R. Martin
(Knockout Love #2)
Publication date: September 27th 2016
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance
From New York Times bestselling author Kelley R. Martin, comes a sexy new standalone in the Knockout Love series.
“Macy Dunham” is synonymous with “off-limits.” Not only is she practically a virgin, but she’s a walking, talking angel who’s way too good for a devil like me. She’s straight-up beautiful, and so far out of my league I want to cry. Did I mention she’s also the godmother to my future niece or nephew?
Now I have to play nice with “Aunt Macy” for the next 18 years. There’s just one tiny problem—the first night I met her, I played with her a little too nice.
Macy was only supposed to be a hook-up. I was supposed to show her a night she’d never forget—give her a little taste of what it’s like to be bad—and then send her on her way. She wasn’t supposed to stick around, and she damn sure wasn’t supposed to become my best friend.
Do you have any idea how hard it is to pretend like I don’t know how soft her skin feels, how good her lips taste, or how perfect it feels inside her? It’s torture. I’d give my left nut for another chance to sink inside Macy, but I can’t afford to mess this up and that’s exactly what would happen.
It’s too bad “Blake Whitmore” is synonymous with “screw-up.” Macy’s a sweet girl who deserves an epic love story. She deserves romance, and a knight in shining armor who slays dragons. I’m not the knight in this story.
I’m the fucking dragon.

#Book Blitz: Lost Wolf (Curse of the Moon, #1) by Stacy Claflin with excerpt #PNR #Shifters @growwithstacy @XpressoTours

This series looks so good and I love the covers (have you seen them on the author's Twitter page? check 'em out!). This Book Blitz has an excerpt and a giveaway. Enjoy!

Lost Wolf
Stacy Claflin
(Curse of the Moon, #1)
Publication date: July 17th 2016
Genres: Paranormal Romance, Young Adult
She’s hiding a dark secret. It already killed her once.
Victoria can’t wait to start college, but there’s a hitch—she can’t remember anything before arriving on campus. Her memories spark when she sees her ruggedly handsome math professor, but she senses something horrific. The shock on his face affirms her fears.
Toby is an alpha wolf who never thought he’d see his true love again—not after she died in his arms. Nothing could have prepared him for her walking into his class. But to his dismay, not only has she forgotten what happened, she doesn’t even know who she is.
He’s determined to do whatever it takes to restore what they’ve lost. Can Toby help Victoria recover her memories, or will he lose her forever?

EXCERPT:
Beads of sweat broke out along my hairline. I wiped them away, tightened my ponytail, and ran faster along the dirt trail, jumping over exposed roots and ducking under low-hanging branches. Pine trees, firs, and alders turned my path into more of an obstacle course than a trail.
A twig snapped behind me.
I glanced back, but didn’t see anything. Probably just a raccoon.
My sneaker hit a root and my arms flew in front of me. I landed on my hands and knees, and slid down an incline. Rocks and branches dug into my skin until I crashed into a huckleberry bush.
I stood and dusted myself off. Blood dripped from my legs. I pulled twigs, dirt, and small rocks from the cuts.
“Nice work, Victoria,” I muttered to myself.
Sasha had said I shouldn’t have gone into the forest for my first jog. But having just moved to the beautiful Olympic Peninsula, I wasn’t about to join a club when I had the great outdoors. Birds chirped all around and a stream bubbled nearby. It was like the woods were telling me I’d made the right choice.
Another snap.
“Who’s there?” I sounded a lot braver than I felt. My heart thundered against my ribcage and I whipped my head around. My roommates had said the woods were safe, but I was also trusting people who had been strangers only a couple days earlier.
Why had I gone into the woods alone? Wasn’t that how half of all horror movies started?
I thought of Sasha running on a treadmill, flirting with cute college guys. Maybe she was the smart one.
Footsteps.
“Hello?” I called.
Nothing. The birds had even stopped singing.
“Is anyone there?”
The footsteps came closer.
My pulse drummed in my ears. I fought to breathe normally.
A small gray and black wolf stepped out from behind the tree. He made eye contact with me.
I didn’t move a muscle, holding its gaze.

#Book Blitz: I’m Not Afraid of Wolves (The Cotton Candy Quintet #4) by Erin Hayes with excerpt and #giveaway #PNR #YA @erinhayes5399 @XpressoTours

I’m Not Afraid of Wolves
Erin Hayes
(The Cotton Candy Quintet #4)
Publication date: September 22nd 2016
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult
Christine would do anything to get away from it all.
After escaping an abusive marriage and heading up a group of brand new performers, she’s tired and in need of a vacation. So when her sister Sara wants her to go camping out in the mountains of Georgia with the girls, she packs her bags for some rest and relaxation. Not even meeting a gorgeous park ranger like Colton Donnelly is going to distract her.
Except Sara didn’t tell her the real reason for the trip: she’s running away from a terrible secret. One that puts all of their lives in danger.
Now the vacation that Christine so desperately needed is ruined, but that’s the least of her worries. She has to use her wits and skills to save them all. Because she soon finds out that werewolves are very real. And they’ll stop at nothing to get their claws into her sister.

EXCERPT:
When the sliding door locked, I turned my gaze onto Sara and watched her, waiting for her to bring up her story. I wanted her to be the one who talked first, if only because I didn’t want to prod her too much if she was traumatized by whatever this was.
But if she was going to try to weasel her way out of talking to me, she had another thing coming.
“Wow,” she murmured softly. “Look at that full moon.”
I picked up a note of fear in her voice. “Yeah,” I said cautiously. “It’s beautiful.”
“I used to think so.” Sara turned around and looked back at me. Her eyes were wide with fright and the rigidity told me something else was going on with her.
Finally, my patience snapped.
“Sara, what’s wrong?”
“You won’t believe me,” she repeated, using the same phrase she used when we were putting food away.
I crossed my arms. “I think you’ll be surprised.”
Sara’s jaw worked. “I think I’m going to need more wine for this.”
I held up my glass. “Just drink mine.” Don’t think I’m letting you back in the kitchen that easily. She’d run away and hide and hoped I’d forget about it. She wanted to talk about it, but she was too afraid to.
She took my glass and downed the rest of it in one chug. I raised my eyebrows in surprise.
“Okay,” she said, as if warming herself up for our talk. “Okay.”
“It will be all right,” I told her.
“No, it won’t.” Tears started filling her eyes. “Christine, do you believe in werewolves?”

He winks, and somehow, it makes me blush.
For some reason, it’s hard to look away too.
“What’s your name?” I ask.
“Alexander Wright.”
I smile. “Maybell Fairweather.”
“Hmm … Maybell … nice name.”
“Thanks.” I blush.
I don’t know why or what it is about him, but he has this gentleness about him that soothes me and makes me want to ask him to stay, even if I don’t have a reason for it.
But then I realize it’s not the only reason I’m looking at him.
Something’s felt off since we met, and I couldn’t put my finger on it, but now, I can.
“Wait …” I mutter. “I know you, right?”
“Yeah, I’m that guy who ate a sandwich with you the other day. You don’t remember? Should I call a nurse?” He chuckles.
I roll my eyes. “No. I mean …” I recognize him from somewhere. “I know you from … school, right?”
His eyes suddenly widen, and he slams his lips shut.
HA! I knew he looked familiar. “No way! I knew it.”
The muscles in his face tighten. “Oh, boy.”
“I’ve seen you at school a few times.”
“Really?” he says, scratching the back of his neck.
“Yeah … don’t tell me I’m making this up. I’m not crazy … right?” I pout.
He smiles, his dimples making me wanna pinch his cheeks. “No, you’re not crazy. It’s just a surprise that you’d even recognize me. People usually don’t even see me. I’m invisible.”
“Yeah?” I bite my lip and frown. “Same here.”
He lowers his arm. “No … you’re not invisible at all,” he says, looking at me with half-mast eyes. “I see you. All the time.”

The Last Messenger of Zitol

When Rishi is kidnapped and taken to Zitól, she faces an unthinkable future: she is to be sacrificed to appease the gods. About the author:

Chelsea Bagley Dyreng is the author of “The Cenote.” She was raised in Wyoming and Idaho and earned her BA at Brigham Young University. She worked for several years as a librarian before moving to North Carolina where she and her husband are raising five God-fearing, book-loving, adventure-seeking kids.

I love it when I assume a story will go in one direction from reading the summary and I'm totally off about it. The Last Messenger of Zitol by Chelsea Dyreng is such a story. This YA historical fiction began with a type of note from a person who was not the main character and we learn from him, a royal named Nadal, about how the story came about. His voice told me enough to keep my interest. Okay, I'll admit it, Nadal fascinated me. And then I met Rishi, a virtuous, strong young woman who is sought out for her very strengths.

It is obvious from the rich details on each page that the subject matter--the rich Mayan history and culture--was well researched by the author. She lovingly describes settings and objects and foods and birds, every thing, we need to experience Rishi's life. From the opening about her grandfather and his amazing stories about his life in Zitol, I too could smell those exotic peppers and see the sunset spread out across the sky. I fell quite easily into this book, enveloped by its engaging narration, as Rishi's life played out across my mind. She is a rich character, taken from her home where she shares a rich bond with her siblings, to be sacrificed in Zitol, and she meets someone who will share her adventure.

The Last Messenger of Zitol intrigued me from page one. There was action, adventure, kidnapping, romance, corruption, tragedy and more. The rich details made my reading easy and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Rishi and Nadal. The words flowed, the pacing held steady, the characters grew and the story kept me invested. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author:

CD Reiss is a USA Today and Amazon bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up, she's at the well, hauling buckets. Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels. Critics have dubbed the books "poetic," "literary," and "hauntingly atmospheric," which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she's some sort of braggart who's too good to chop a cord of wood. If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.
