Sometimes, a few dares can change lives…
The weekend before the start of senior year, Sophie Erickson and her best friends, Ella and Grace, discover a handwritten list ofdares tucked away in the glove compartment of Sophie’s beat-up old Toyota. But this isn’t just any list; it’s a dead girl's bucket list.
Sophie's beloved aunt Suzy died as a teenager in a fatal fall, leaving Sophie with an overly cautious family, a few fading photographs, and a bucket of bolts that barely passes for a car. But now, Sophie has Suzy’s list of the things she wanted to do in her last year of high school. Sophie can't help but wonder: What would happen if she tried to fulfill Suzy’s last wishes, to live out the longed-for life of her aunt, her hero?
As Sophie and her friends attempt to knock off the things on Suzy's list of dares, love blossoms in unexpected places and Sophie begins to feel that her life is finally coming together...when in fact, everything is slowly unraveling around her. When the truth about a long-held family secret threatens to shatter everything she believed to be true, Sophie is forced to question everything she knew about the life and people she believed in, and ultimately herself.

What I really enjoy about reading a well-written YA contemporary novel is the way the characters, their situations, and their journey make me feel by the story's end. None of the Regular Rules is a sweet, touching, and thought-provoking novel which touches upon so many relevant things teens like Sophie deal with. As a senior, she is facing that big jump from teen to adult as she prepares for life after high school. When she finds a bucket list written by her beloved Aunt Suzy left behind inside her deceased relative's vehicle, Sophie and her two closest friends, Ella and Grace, talks about the things on the list. Are they so content with the way they've been living their lives or do they want to shake things up during senior year and pay homage to Suzy by fulfilling the list?
The answers can be found in Erin Downing's wonderful story. I really liked the camaraderie between the trio of childhood friends, each was very distinct and when together they gelled like good friends often do. I especially liked Sophie as narrator. Her voice was so realistic and her thoughts reflected mine much of the time. She loved her parents and yet I liked the way she viewed her mom and those "meetings" she liked to set up for the family. As for the hottie next door, Johnny Rush, I had to laugh when he first made his appearance in the story. Driving a lawn mower with a wagon behind it carrying a keg for one of his lake parties was an instant classic scene and the way Sophie thought about his name ('porn star') was hilarious. There were so many of these "gems" peppered throughout the book which made her story unforgettable.
There was so much to like and enjoy about None of the Regular Rules. Friendship, facing the future, first love, risk taking, and family mysteries, the pacing was perfect and kept me in the story so much so I didn't want to stop reading. Looking for a contemporary YA to completely fall into? None of the Regular Rules is the story for you.
